Versus picture

So we thought we would starting pitting Pebble against other smart watches. Today we’re choosing the MetaWatch; it’s pretty similar to the Pebble in various aspects, so it should be a interesting comparison. But enough talk, let’s get started shall we?

The Comparison

Comparison of Pebble and MetaWatch

Final Thoughts

So how does each watch stack up? Each watch shares compatibility for the two biggest smartphone operating systems. The MetaWatch adds extra buttons and an ambient light sensor. Although both watches take advantage of reflective, polymer network LCD’s, each watch has different final implementations. Other differences would include the OS, the dev tools that would be used for each respective watch, and also the physical structure and build quality. Is the MetaWatch worth the fifty extra dollars? 1. I’m all for the side-by-side, but your source information has some inaccuracies. It would be good of you to correct it. In this regard I thought I’d offer some assistance.

First, Pebble uses a SHARP memory LCD display. Their ‘e-paper’ description is 100% marketing hype.

The Meta Watch display uses a SHARP Polymer Network memory LCD. We selected this (over the display Pebble uses) because of its unique aesthetic qualities.

TI’s Code Composer Studio (CCS) toolchain is also available at no cost for embedded systems developers.

In addition, Meta Watch’s code is provided under an open source license (except for Bluetooth stack which we license). The Pebble code is proprietary.

I’d also like to point out the superior materials used in the Meta Watch watch assembly (case/buttons/strap/lens) vs. those used in Pebble.

The Meta Watch case & all 6 buttons are made of stainless steel that has been beveled, brushed &/or polished. The Pebble watch case is made of plastic.

The Meta Watch lens is made of glass. Pebble uses plastic.

The Meta Watch strap is made of genuine leather. Pebble’s strap is made of (you guessed it) plastic.

BTW, the materials used in Meta Watch are the same found in fashion watches that retail for up to $500. This is important in product execution of wearables because we wear fashion….and carry electronics.

    Thanks, Bill

Thanks for the info about the specs. The screen choice is interesting.

Personally, I much prefer pebble’s synthetic watch band than a leather one. Leather is gross and cruel to animals.

      Hey Bill,
Thanks again for the info. The post has been updated and I feel like any elements that were misleading at all have been taken care of.

Now in reference to your comment about “superior materials” I do feel like that is all in the eye of the end user. Some may come to prefer certain materials over others so to claim one is superior based on the expense, I feel is more of an opinion than a statement.

Regardless, your points were clear and we appreciate your comment.

“However the Pebble is not to be discredited, as it’s larger E-Paper display can be viewed in extreme lighting conditions.”

My MetaWatch can be viewed in direct sunlight as well…

There has been NO situation where I haven’t been able to see the screen of it (that of course includes using the light when needed, in the dark).
